Congratulations on your new baby! Newborn sessions are very important because newborns are only ‘new’ for such a short amount of time. Babies change so much in just the first month of their life. Newborn photos are something that becomes a keepsake and an heirloom for you and your child.
I find that newborn sessions are best if they take place within the little one’s first 10 days of life. Babies of this age typically sleep deeper and do not mind being moved around while they sleep as much.
I prefer to do newborn sessions in my Gas City, Indiana studio, where I have all of my baskets, wraps, blankets, and other props. You just bring sleepy baby, because I typically like to photograph baby naked or in a knitted wrap you don’t need to worry too much about outfits. While you’re here for your session, I encourage parents to take the time to relax! Take a nap, write thank you notes, check your email, whatever you need to do!
Some other important things to know that will help your session go smoothly:
Siblings: Family and sibling portraits are welcome, however, I only advise having bother or sister here for a short span of time and not the whole 3-4 hour session. It’s important that we have a quiet and relaxed environment for the newborn, and little brother or sister running around might make it difficult to maintain that atmosphere.
Props: I have a constantly growing and changing prop collection here at my studio, but if there is a specific prop you’d like to bring, please let me know! I do ask that you send me a photo of the prop before the session and clear it with me first for a few reason, the biggest being safety or that it won’t photograph well, the second being I need to have a bit of time to plan. If you have a keepsake item like a knitted hat or blanket, those things are fine and we can include them!
Newborn sessions take time. Please plan for a 3-4 hour session. This will give us plenty of time to make sure baby is good and sleepy, as well as stop for feedings and changes as needed. Newborn sessions are better if they are not rushed.
Once you book and make a deposit, we will talk over color schemes of your home as I really want these photos to be something that will fit in with the decor of your home or the child’s nursery. Like all sessions with Bethany Mills Photography, newborn sessions are planned around your style.
Once the session is over, I will edit and enhance photos. Within 1-2 weeks you will be contacted to set-up a time to come to the studio to view your images. Viewing image proofs with you in the studio is important to me because photos can look so different on a monitor that is not calibrated for images, and I want you to see your photos at their best (and accurate to how they will look when they have been printed). During this session you will be given the link to your private image gallery and password access. Prints can either be purchased in studio or from your gallery. Your gallery will remain online for 30 days following the proof review. If you need the gallery to be extended online for an additional 30 days there is a fee of $15.
I am willing to travel to your home for a newborn session, but it will just be me and my camera. In home newborn sessions are great for those that want more of a lifestyle feel to their newborn images. Please contact me for a quote on travel fees.
