I was ten years old the first time I picked up a camera. The camera was my dad’s antique Minolta SLR; a camera that once belonged to my great-grandfather. As I held the old antique camera in my hands I fell in love. I loved the act of twisting the focus ring to get the photo to look the way I wanted, and I loved the ‘click’ sound the shutter made when I pushed the button. There is something magical about the idea that one can capture something through the lens of the camera and freeze a moment in time forever.
When I was 12, my parents got me a digital camera for Christmas. It may not have been the best camera in the world, but I did not care, it was mine. From that Christmas morning on, a camera has rarely left my side.
Now 10+ years after first picking up my dad’s camera, my love for photography has remained. I still love the chance to capture a memory in time forever, and there is still something about the ‘click’ sound that the shutter makes that makes my heart happy.
As I have grown up and gotten older I have learned an important lesson: Life keeps moving. I am more thankful than ever for all the photos I have taken along the years that have preserved my memories for years to come.
